Epilepsy Study Has Found That One Type of CBD Is Superior 1024 682 The Farmula

Epilepsy Study Has Found That One Type of CBD Is Superior

Epilepsy, which affects more than 50 million people across the globe, is a complicated neurological disorder with few treatment options. That is why many people with epilepsy are currently researching the effects of CBD on their condition, because even a slight effect is better than nothing.

CBD is often thought to be a cure-all, since it can ease muscle pain and stress, promotes better sleep, and even reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy. That said, you want to make sure you are purchasing quality CBD to get these benefits; and if you plan on using it for epilepsy, you are going to want pharmaceutical CBD and nothing else.

Here’s why.

CBD Oil and Epilepsy: How It Works

As complex as epilepsy is, it is also extremely challenging to treat. Those who are afflicted with epilepsy are often on multiple medications—anticonvulsants and antispasmodics. However, anticonvulsants come with an array of debilitating side effects, such as nausea, headaches, slurred speech, liver failure, depression, and much more. When quality of life is impacted, it makes the condition difficult. Moreover, nearly 30 percent of people with epilepsy have no reaction to traditional treatments. This means that they get zero relief from anticonvulsant medication.

So what do these people do?

Up to now, there was not much individuals with epilepsy could do, but now there is hope that CBD can help. CBD oil has been found by multiple studies to produce little to no side effects and to help diminish the effects of epilepsy. This happens through CBD’s interaction with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which affects homeostasis.

CBD targets the CB1 and CB2 receptors within the central nervous system and brain. The receptors are used by neurotransmitters; when you use CBD, those neurotransmitters are indirectly impacted, and can use reduce inflammation and other triggers of epilepsy. While more research is needed to understand just how this mechanism works, for right now, scientists know that CBD oil does have a positive effect on epilepsy symptoms.

Benefits of CBD Oil For Epilepsy

Three pivotal pieces of research have looked into the benefits of CBD on Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, two severe types of epilepsy. In every study, the use of CBD oil limited the number of seizures the participants experienced. While it is unclear whether CBD directly mitigated the seizures or it if worked synergistically with epilepsy medication, the positive effect was present across the board.

Other ways CBD oil may help with epilepsy include:

  • Reducing inflammation. The most popular for using CBD is to reduce inflammation. There are glycine receptors within the central nervous system that CBD interacts with; when activated, the receptors inhibit pain sensations. CBD also disrupts cytokine production, limiting inflammation, and stops the re-uptake of adenosine, which also reduces inflammatory responses in the body.
  • Decreasing anxiety. Many people suffering from epilepsy also have anxiety. CBD can assist with decreasing anxiety by working like a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) by activating 5-HT1A receptors to raise serotonin levels.

Studies on Epilepsy and CBD Oil: Why One Grade of CBD is Better

To date, there has only been one CBD product that has received approval from government agencies, such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help treat epilepsy. The CBD drug, called Epidiolex, has been made for rare and hard to treat forms of epilepsy—Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes. This also means that only Epidiolex can be prescribed to help with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome while all others that haven’t been approved are considered illegal.

This is important. It means that not every CBD product on the shelf is going to help you deal with painful medical conditions like epilepsy. The CBD industry is hardly regulated, and there are many unscrupulous producers out there who sell knockoffs at a reduced price.

Artisanal CBD vs. Pharmaceutical CBD

One recent study has drawn the line in the sand between artisanal (not regulated) and pharmaceutical (regulated) CBD. The research was led by Dr. Nathan T. Cohen of the Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. The group took adolescents with an average age of 10 and tested the effectiveness of various forms of CBD oil on them. 32 percent of the participants had Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. 6 percent had Dravet syndrome.

22 participants were given pharmaceutical-grade cannabidiol while another 9 took an artisanal blend. The researchers then recorded the doses, amount of CBD in the blood, and frequency of seizures, as well as the side effects experienced. During the study, artisanal CBD was at an average of 31 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), while pharmaceutical CBD leveled out at 124 ng/mL of blood. Interestingly, the 9 participants who took artisanal CBD saw a 70 percent increase in seizures, while those given medical-grade CBD experienced a 39 percent drop.

Unfortunately, 11 of the children and teenagers taking pharmaceutical CBD had side effects and needed to stop taking the CBD.

What do these results tell us?

First, because a lot of artisanal CBD on the market today has not been tested, it can contain very little CBD. Some brands claim to sell CBD, but they are selling formulas that contain next to nothing. Others give an amount but provide no third-party lab test to prove it. In 2017, a study was published in JAMA that stated around 70 percent of artisanal CBD products did not contain the amount of CBD listed on the packaging, so do your research.

Another study from 2018 published in Forensic Science International stated that some CBD vape liquids carry synthetic cannabinoids, such as 5F-ADB, a Schedule-1 controlled substance, and dextromethorphan, which is often abused.

This means that, if you are trying to treat epilepsy with CBD, you need to purchase quality-assured CBD products from a reputable brand. Furthermore, you need to discuss treating yourself with CBD with a medical professional. Visit your GP and talk about CBD, learn how it may affect your condition and interact with your current medications. Do not purchase cheap CBD brands, because it could come back to hurt you.

Do not purchase cheap CBD brands, because it could come back to hurt you. This holds true for regular CBD use and if you want to use it for your epilepsy. Conventional treatments for epilepsy do not always work, but pharmaceutical CBD may be able to help with your symptoms.

How Does CBD Oil Affect Your Mood? 1024 682 The Farmula

How Does CBD Oil Affect Your Mood?

Mood can be affected by dozens of factors every single day. From the moment you wake up to the instant you go to bed, you are exposed to a barrage that can cause stress, sadness, and even anxiety or depression or both. Our minds shift to how we perceive the world, but sometimes you can’t control how you react to certain things. Sometimes, you need help.

If you ever thought about how CBD oil affects your mood and if it can help you feel happier or more content, then keep reading. We answer those questions and more below.

What Causes Mood Swings? What About Depression?

Mood swings have several causes. Some are generated from a physical or mental condition, and others develop in times of stress, be it financial, work-related, or something else. Sometimes, you get moody because you aren’t sleeping that well. Other conditions can be from hormonal imbalances, bipolar disorder, depression, or schizophrenia.

Symptoms of mood swings include:

  • Poor decision-making
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Fatigue
  • Inability to focus or concentrate on tasks
  • Upset appetite

You might notice that these symptoms can also reflect depression. Many continue to believe that depression is the result of hormonal or chemical imbalances, such as a lack of serotonin. Serotonin is indeed an essential piece of the puzzle, but that is not the only thing that is linked to a poor mood.

Other things, like chronic stress, trauma, and inflammation can cause depression and mood swings, too.

With more than one route leading to depression and dour moods, it is obvious that there is no single route to “feeling better” either. However, you may be able to regulate your moods and feel more positive about life by adding CBD oil to your current health regimen.

What Is CBD Oil?

So what is this thing called “CBD” anyway? You have definitely heard about CBD by now. It’s one of the major buzzwords throughout the world. Also known as cannabidiol, CBD is a chemical compound derived from the cannabis sativa plant, which is responsible for both industrial hemp and cannabis.

CBD is a lot like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound of cannabis, minus the effects that give you a high. That is why CBD is used more often to quell anxiety and help you feel relaxed. It is also why CBD is 100% legal for all ages and demographics throughout the UK and many other countries.

How Does CBD Oil Affect Your Mood?

CBD has an unusual affect on the body—as well as your mood. The human body has something called the endocannabinoid system that contributes to sleep, appetite, immunity, and relaxation. In other words, when the endocannabinoid system isn’t working properly, your mood is probably horrendous. You might even experience mood swings and depression.

When you take CBD oil in any form, those cannabinoids bind to receptors present throughout the endocannabinoid system, regulating homeostatic balance. It has even been reported that CBD raises the amount of anandamide in the brain, which is essential in the performance of two pivotal neurotransmitters—serotonin and dopamine.

Other Ways CBD Helps Regulate Mood

There are other reasons why CBD helps with regulating mood and diminishing the effects of depression. First, CBD is said to have neuroprotective properties. What this means is that it shields the brain from neurodegenerative diseases and damage as you age.

Second, while the effects aren’t yet totally understood, CBD may also be mildly anti-psychotic. The effect is mainly seen when CBD is working in conjunction with THC, for it dampens the psychoactive effects of THC and moderates THC’s ability to make people feel anxious. When you don’t have THC working on your system, however, CBD instead indirectly works with dopamine and serotonin.

Interestingly, CBD may be able to assist with something called “neurogenesis,” or regeneration of neurons, within the brain [1]. During the approval process for a drug meant to help those suffering from epilepsy, it was found that CBD can protect neurons in the brain’s hippocamus. This happens through the stimulation of the endocannabinoid system [2[, the increase of brain-deprived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) [3], activation of serotonin receptors [4], and binding to PPAR receptors, which manufacture neuro-protective and anti-inflammatory chemicals [5].

How To Use CBD To Improve Your Mood

If you are interested in using CBD to your advantage and improving your mood, then you need to know how to use CBD effectively. CBD comes in an array of dispensing methods, flavors, concentrations, and so on. Further, the way you take CBD and the amount that you need to feel any effect on your mood is going to be dependent on things like your tolerance, your genes, metabolism, and weight. That means that people who use CBD to assist with their anxiety might use a completely different strength and potency than you do.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to get enough CBD throughout the day to affect your mood. You can try sublingual tinctures, CBD edibles, capsules, or vaping.

Scientific research that has looked into CBD for mood disorders states that improvement occurs with higher dosages—around 400-600 mg a day over several weeks. However, you might need to build up to this amount, so start off around 15 mg a day and see how you feel. Then work up to the higher dose. If you have experience taking CBD products, then you might be able to start with a greater amount.

From there, monitor your mood. Note your energy levels, how regular your moods become, and if you are feeling any side effects. From there, you can customize your CBD routine!

The Hidden Antibiotic Potential of Cannabis 1024 684 The Farmula

The Hidden Antibiotic Potential of Cannabis

Times are hard. Every day greets you with heaps of anxiety, sleepless nights, and fear of getting sick. If you have other medical conditions, you might find them exacerbated by the continuous stress that current global circumstances have wrought. But if you’re using CBD products, you might be just a little better off. Your immune system, for one, may already be supported by cannabinoids.

With everything that CBD and other cannabinoids found in the miraculous cannabis plant is noted for doing, can we also rely on it to defeat superbugs? Turns out that researchers have found cannabis has antibiotic potential.

Here is everything you need to know about the studies and more.

How Can CBD Support My Immune System?

First, before getting into the recent discoveries, let’s first review the benefits of CBD, the non-psychoactive compound found in hemp and cannabis. CBD and other cannabinoids, like THC, work with the body’s endocannbinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating homeostasis, including immune responses.

The ECS is a very complex system and still not entirely understood, but it is obvious that the endocannabinoid system and CBD work synergistically. That is why CBD can help you manage stress, regulate your sleep schedule, and reduce pain and inflammation.

Even without cannabis’ hidden antibiotic superpowers, CBD alone is an excellent supplement for immune health!

Antibiotics in Cannabis

Back in February 2020, a time that seems ages prior to the onset of a global pandemic, there was a group of researchers from Canada’s McMaster University who found that a phytocannabinoid in cannabis called cannabigerol (CBG) has the power to overcome methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, otherwise known as MRSA. As you may know, MRSA is dangerous because of an astounding resistance to antibiotics.

CBG, much like cannabidiol (CBD) will not get you high, but it can potentially save your from MRSA and like infections, according to the McMaster University researchers. In the study, cannabinoids were investigated to see which commercially available ones had the highest levels of antibiotic activity. The group eventually focused on CBG. The cannabinoid showed a remarkable ability to stop bacteria from creating biofilm—communities of microorganisms—by attacking the bacteria’s cell membranes.

Although more research is needed, CBG could eventually become a way to treat superbugs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the near future. That said, you don’t have to wait to start taking CBG. Many CBD products contain CBG as well, so you can bolster your immune system now.

CBD as an Antibiotic and Antimicrobial

In 2019, a study that supports the more latest developments in antibiotic research was reported by Mark Blaskovich, PhD, from the Centre for Superbug Solutions at the University of Queensland, Australia. Blaskovich and the other researchers created a synthetic CBD that was capable of killing Gram-positive bacteria, including bacteria that could cause pneumonia. Some of the species of bacteria that were successfully killed with CBD included Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis.

Furthermore, Blaskovich’s research revealed that CBD didn’t cause antibiotic resistance in the tested bacteria, which is an excellent sign. It means that CBD could help assist in the treatment of superbugs.

Other research done by Italian and British scientists has found that CBD has a natural ability to kill bacteria before it can spread, thereby assisting in the treatment of many infections.

Perspective on the Data

Another microbiologist, Brandon Novy of Reed College, stated that the results of several studies, including the ones conducted by Blaskovich, are promising. He believes that, because the bacteria cannot create biofilm, CBD and CBG may become a key ingredient in future antibiotics and antimicrobial medication. “Biofilm,” states Novy, “is an important part of the whole infection process… It helps the bacteria attach [to a surface or host] and survive.”

Now, researchers are looking to find whether there is such a thing as a toxic dose of CBG and what is the best method of delivery of CBD to ensure these antibiotic effects are maximized.

Taking into account the research being done on CBD and other cannabinoids, it is obvious that CBD products are going to become much popular and potentially become more than just a complementary supplement to treatment. Perhaps one day, it won’t be unheard of to take a CBD-based antibiotic. For now, though, you can enjoy a heightened immune system by using a broad range of CBD products from Farmula, including tinctures and salves.

Remember that you should always discuss options with a GP prior to using CBD, especially if you are using other medications and prescribed antibiotics.
